A Heart of a Dragon: Baby Nikolai’s Journey

When Haley and Dmitriy learned they were expecting a baby, joy came rushing in. The pregnancy was a welcome surprise — one Haley wasn’t sure would ever be possible due to her own health conditions. From the very beginning, she monitored her health closely, determined to give her baby the strongest start she could.

But during a routine ultrasound in Casper, Wyoming, their world shifted. Doctors saw concerns with baby Nikolai’s heart and spine. The medical team recommended that Haley travel to Denver, where specialists could provide advanced testing and care for both mother and baby.Haley & Dmitriy

That’s when the exceptional team at Orr’s Hope Foundation, an organization that provides support to Wyoming families who are caring for a child with complex medical conditions,  stepped in, connecting the family with Ronald McDonald House-Denver. Knowing they would need to stay close to the hospital for an extended period, Haley and Dmitriy checked in to RMHC‑Denver in late October.

“I don’t know where we’d be without the help from Ronald McDonald House-Denver. It’s such a blessing. It’s truly become our home away from home.” – Haley

Baby Nikolai arrived on November 14th, and treatment began immediately to address his heart and spine conditions. Doctors soon discovered that the hole in his heart couldn’t be repaired. He would need a heart transplant.

At just under two months old, on January 5th, Nikolai received the gift that would save his life.

“He’s a fighter. He has the heart of a dragon,” Haley shared, her voice full of awe and gratitude. The medical team was pleased with his outcome, and now the focus turns to healing — slowly, steadily, surrounded by love.

Throughout this journey, Haley’s mom, Betty, has been able to stay at Ronald McDonald House-Denver as well, offering comfort and support during long days at the hospital. With several more months of recovery ahead, Dmitriy may return to Casper during the week for work, coming back to Denver on weekends to be with his family. Haley’s dad and his wife even traveled from Indiana to meet their grandson and wrap the family in encouragement.

Ronald McDonald House-Denver has been the constant thread holding them close with a comfortable room, a hot meal, a community that understands what it means to face the unimaginable.

As Haley put it simply, “We’re so grateful for all the resources available here.”
