Volunteer Spotlight: Honoring the Heart of Service

John at the Treasure Chest
Every volunteer brings something uniquely their own to the RMHC-Denver. Some bring calm. Some bring energy. Some bring a quiet steadiness that families come to rely on. John brings all three, wrapped in a warmth that makes people feel instantly supported. His journey to our community is as heartfelt as the care he gives every week.

A Journey Rooted in Gratitude

John and wife hikingJohn’s connection with Ronald McDonald House began long before he ever stepped through our doors as a volunteer. As an infant, he underwent two open heart surgeries and his family stayed at the Syracuse Ronald McDonald House during that difficult time. His parents still rave about the comfort and support they received, and their gratitude became a lasting part of his story.

That early experience inspired him to begin donating to Ronald McDonald House while he was still in college. Years later, after moving from New York City to Colorado with his wife, he decided it was time to give back in a more hands-on way. We’re grateful he did.

Three Years of Showing Up with Heart

John has been volunteering with RMHC-Denver for almost three years, and no two days look the same. He jumps into whatever is needed, whether it’s doing laundry, sorting mail or assisting families.

Ask him about his favorite task and he doesn’t hesitate. “Taking a child to the treasure chest to choose a toy lights me up every time,” shared John. “It’s a small joy that can brighten a long day for a young guest, and I never take that for granted.”

A Moment That Stands Out

Among the many memories he’s collected, one in particular stays with him. A family had just arrived after a long drive when they discovered they had a flat tire. Without hesitation, John stepped in and changed it for them. It was a simple act of kindness, but for a family already carrying so much, it meant the world. John was simply glad he could help.

Creating Comfort Through Care

John believes his role is to help keep the House welcoming and supportive. Whether he’s offering a smile, lending a hand or simply being present, he knows that small gestures can make a big difference for families navigating difficult days. His consistency and compassion help create the safe space our families depend on.

Life Beyond the House

John at raceWhen he’s not volunteering, John is usually outside or on the move. He loves playing frisbee golf, mountain biking, going to concerts and traveling. In fact, he and his wife take one or two international trips each year, along with plenty of adventures across the United States. “People are always surprised when I tell them that I did not take my first flight until I was twenty‑five!” He’s certainly making up for lost time now.

A Heartfelt Thank You

John’s story is a reminder of how personal experiences can inspire a lifetime of giving. His dedication, kindness and willingness to help in any situation make him an invaluable part of our volunteer community. We’re grateful for everything he brings to the House and for the countless families who feel supported because he’s here.
